Every number on an Asteria entry is either stored or derived — and at launch, every stored scientific value will trace back to a public source. This page lists each field, its unit and where it comes from, and is plain about which parts are still preview data.
Stored fields#
Stored fields are the values written into each catalogue record. They fall into three groups.
Identity and editorial#
| Field | Type | Meaning | Source |

Derived fields#
Derived fields are never stored. They are computed from the stored values every time, so they cannot drift out of step with them.

nearEarth | yes / no | True for the Atira, Aten, Apollo and Amor classes (perihelion below 1.3 AU). |

speedKmS | km/s | 29.78 / √a, the mean orbital speed in a circular approximation |
absoluteMagnitude | magnitude | 5 × log10(1329 / (D × √p)), from diameter D and albedo p |
traits | list | Descriptive tags, from the rules below |
Trait rules#
| Trait | Rule |
|---|---|
| Near-Earth object | Orbit class is Atira, Aten, Apollo or Amor |
| Fast rotator | Rotation period under 3 hours |
| Slow rotator | Rotation period over 12 hours |
| High inclination | Inclination over 15° |
| Large body | Diameter of 10 km or more |
| Sub-kilometre | Diameter under 1 km |
| High albedo | Albedo of 0.30 or more |
| Very dark surface | Albedo of 0.06 or less |
From fields to token metadata#
The same record feeds the planned token metadata. Familiar marketplace fields — name, description, image and attributes — sit at the top level; the full record lives in a namespaced asteria block, including the official designation and a list of data sources that will be filled in on verification. Here is the generated metadata for Vesperine:
{

"description": "The first light after dusk. A stony wanderer of the middle belt, bright enough to catch the Sun like a struck match. This token is a digital collectible and confers no ownership of any celestial body.",

Planned sources#
At launch, verified entries will draw on established public sources. Asteria does not discover, observe or measure asteroids.
| Source | Operated by | What it will provide |
|---|---|---|
| JPL Small-Body Database (opens in a new tab) | NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Solar System Dynamics group | Orbital elements with epoch, absolute magnitude, and diameter, albedo, rotation period and spectral type where they have been measured |
| Minor Planet Center (opens in a new tab) | Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, under the auspices of the IAU | Official numbers and designations, observation records and orbits |
| Thermal-infrared surveys | Various, including NASA's NEOWISE | Diameters and albedos |
| Lightcurve compilations | Published research catalogues | Rotation periods |
| International Astronomical Union (opens in a new tab) | IAU, through its Working Group Small Bodies Nomenclature | Official names, referenced only — never used as Asteria names |
Verification process#
Verification is planned for phase 1 of the roadmap, before any entry is offered.
Match the designation
Each inventory entry is matched to its official Minor Planet Center number or designation. An entry that cannot be matched unambiguously is not offered.
Snapshot the data
Orbital and physical values are retrieved from the source databases, together with the retrieval date and the epoch of the orbital elements.
Recompute and cross-check
Derived values — orbit class, perihelion, aphelion, period and absolute magnitude — are recomputed and compared with the source. Differences, such as a body near a class boundary, are reviewed by hand.
Flag what is unknown
Many asteroids have no measured diameter, albedo, rotation period or spectrum. Missing values will be marked as not measured, not filled with estimates presented as measurements.
Publish
The entry is published with
officialDesignationset, its sources listed in the token metadata, and the "Preview data" indicator removed.

Update policy#
Science moves on, and the catalogue is designed to move with it.
- What can change. Orbits are refined as observations accumulate, and new measurements can revise a diameter, an albedo or a spectral class. Scientific data is planned to be versioned and dated, so that every revision is traceable.
- What never changes. The registry ID, and the registry name once it has been sealed at the naming ceremony.
- How changes are announced. Changes to the data model, the metadata schema and the catalogue are recorded in the changelog.
- Corrections. A channel for reporting data errors is planned to be published before launch.
How revised scientific data will be reflected in already-issued token metadata depends on the final contract and storage design, and will be documented in Smart contracts before launch.
